Dumbbell vs. Barbell Bench Press

Dumbbell and Barbell Bench Press are two of the most popular and most effective exercises for building the chest, triceps, and front delts, but which one is better. The biggest pros for barbell bench over dumbbell are that barbell can usually allow you to lift heavier, barbell is easier to stabilize, and the progression for barbell is easier and usually allows for smaller increments. The cons of barbell is that there is a more limited range of motion, barbell can allow more muscle imbalances, and because of the greater stability there is less activation of the stabilizing muscles. The pros for dumbbell are a deeper stretch, tighter contraction, independent work to correct imbalances, and engagement of more muscles. The cons of dumbbell are less weight, a higher demand for coordination, and slower progression and more plateaus. I find that both exercises are equal to each other, and I consider them both tied for the best compound pushing movement, for implementation I suggest alternating between the two every push/chest day, but if this implementation does not align with your split barbell bench is slightly better for maximal strength and dumbbell is slightly better for hypetrophy.
